Turning a Beloved Character into a Life-Sized Brick Experience

Aang is one of the most recognizable and beloved animated characters of all time—known for his energy, personality, and iconic design.

Our team at Bricker Builds set out to answer a bold question:

What would it look like to bring Aang to life at full human scale using LEGO bricks?

📸 The Result

Watch the Full Build in Action

  • Height: 4’11” (true-to-character scale)

  • Pieces: 15,000+ bricks

  • Build Time: 2 weeks
  • Team: Dave Holder, Christopher Gearhart, Lewis Meeny

  • Debut: Brickworld Chicago 2023

The final sculpture captured Aang’s expressive pose and personality while maintaining structural integrity at a large scale.

🧠 The Challenge

Creating a life-sized character model presented several unique challenges:

  • Translating a 2D animated character into a believable 3D form

  • Maintaining proportional accuracy at nearly 5 feet tall

  • Engineering strength in thin structural areas like the ankles, which bore the full weight of the model

  • Ensuring the model could be transported to trade shows without damage or structural failure

At this scale, every design decision compounds—small inaccuracies become highly visible, and weak points become critical risks.

⚙️ The Process

Step 1

Digital Sculpting & Prototyping

We began by developing a highly detailed 3D model using various software tools (both publicly available and proprietary), carefully refining proportions to match Aang’s animated design while ensuring it would translate well into brick form.

Step 2

Structural Engineering

Special attention was given to internal support systems to address the unique physical challenges of the build.

  • Reinforced internal structures were developed to support the model’s weight, especially through the narrow ankle connection points utilizing metal support structures.

  • The arms were engineered to be removable for transport, using a secure connection that maintained both strength and clean visual integration

  • The entire model was designed with transport in mind, ensuring it could be safely moved, assembled, and displayed across the nation at events like Brickworld Chicago without compromising stability.

Over several months, the team iterated on form, color blocking, and stability to achieve the final result.

🎯 The Purpose

This project wasn’t just a display piece—it was a strategic promotional build.

It was designed to:

  • Showcase our ability to execute large-scale, high-impact builds

  • Generate attention and engagement at conventions

  • Serve as a visual anchor for promoting our air bender product line

👉 In other words:

A flagship piece designed to draw people in and elevate everything around it

🚀 The Impact

Debuting at Brickworld Chicago, the sculpture became:

  • A major visual attraction on the convention floor

  • A conversation starter for attendees and fans

  • A powerful example of what’s possible with large-scale brick design

💡 Why This Matters for Brands

While this build was inspired by a beloved character, the same principles apply to brands:

Large-scale, visually striking builds create attention, engagement, and memorability in ways traditional displays can’t.

This type of work translates directly into:

✅ Trade show centerpieces

✅ Experiential marketing installations

✅ Retail displays

✅ Social media moments
